Subject: Burning of the NTR Nagar vegetable market – Destitute situation of the vendors – Requesting for rehabilitation
Members of our organization have visited the site of the burnt NTR Nagar vegetable market near L.B. Nagar, Hyderabad. After hearing the accounts of the vendors and the secretary of the regional market committee, we have come to the conclusion that an enquiry into the incident, if it is taking place, is not going on in an unbiased manner. Most of the vendors there are women and almost all are small vendors. They have been rendered destitute because of the burning of the vegetable stalls.
We request the following two things from the district administration immediately:
1) Have a thorough enquiry conducted into the incident to determine if it’s accidental or if it’s a case of arson.
2) Have stalls re-built at the same location where they were earlier for all the retail vendors who have been affected by the incident.
There are strong vested interests that would like the vegetable vendors’ stalls removed from their current location. Since the vegetable vendors have been carrying on their business in the same location for over two decades now, it would be doing grave injustice to them to dislocate them from their current location to a less favoured location just because they come in the way of some other, bigger businessmen. Please keep this in mind in dealing with the situation.
